Conservatory Restoration
Located in Parwich, the conservatory was subject to frequent flooding from a local spring. This caused the wood to rot, so we applied stabilisers & hardeners to make the most effected areas the strongest areas of the conservatory, stopping any future damage.
Garage Door Replacement
Using Sapele Hardwood Timber (supplied by H Lee & Sons in Ashbourne) and the original hinges, we built and fitted four new garage doors on-site.
Dragon's Nest Shop Front Restoration
The customer asked for a full antique restoration of all the sash windows. We used original materials wherever we could (including animal glue for true period authenticity) and sourced antique fitch latches which complimented the period of the windows. We then used base paint on the windows which allowed scumble-graining to be applied to the finish.
London Sash Window Restoration
We were called to a job in Walthamstow. This client was quoted £1,000 per window to restore (London prices + cost of replacement). With travel and accommodation expenses included, we still managed to beat their quoted price by 50%. Upon arrival, we found the windows were in somewhat of a state, but not to the extent of what the other companies had quoted for & we pride ourselves on honest pricing. We fitted polished brass fitch latches and new polished brass sash hooks.
Stargazing Window Restoration & Stripping
The two front panels on the apex of the window were bowing and leaking, causing damp in the house. With the help of Ashbourne Scaffolding, we stripped the windows completely, took the front two panels off, treated the effected areas with resin and primed the full window ready for our decorator (Longford Decorating Company) to finish the job.
Bramhalls Shop Front Restoration
The owners got in touch to see if the windows could be restored as two of the toughened glass panes had cracked. They had been quoted a lot by local companies to replace the full window, however we were able to restore the timber frame and only replaced the window panes - all at a fraction of the cost.
Bay Window Restoration
At Belle Vue Road, Ashbourne, this client was selling up to move down South. They couldn't afford to replace the window so they contacted us to work our magic at a fraction of the price, ready to be sold just 3 days later.
Georgian Bay Window Restoration
Based in Waterhouses (Derbyshire) on the road front, this bay window used to be maintained by the homeowner but they have struggled to keep it up in recent years. She thought it needed to be replaced but contacted us and we were pleased to tell her it was salvageable! We used resin repairs, fitted with panelling and made it structurally sound ready for the painter to complete the work.
Cheddar Gorge Shop Front Restoration
The iconic Cheddar Gorge in Ashbourne. Faced with a hefty replacement quote, we saved our client at least 75% and delivered a renovation worthy of this Historic building in the heart of Ashbourne. We completed the work without any disruption to the business and within a short timescale. Shout out to Joe Beech at Meadow Signs Ltd for adding the finishing touches!
Timber Restoration in Middleton
We were recommended by a good friend to a lady in Middleton who is looking at selling her house. In order to sell she had been told by the estate agent that in order to get a decent price for the house the windows and doors would need to be replaced. They went off and got a couple of quotes from different joinery firms and were quoted thousands to replace. In need of another option we were called and saved the client 75% in costs to sell the house.
Georgian Single Hung Tilted Sash Restoration
This old coaching house in Winster has had some interesting work done over the years and was in desperate need of some restoration. The neglect had become that obvious that we saw the windows needed work. I dropped a card in and we got a phone call to start straight away. We started with the weights and glazed the windows with blown glass, continued to take away the tong and groove panelling to uncover the original lime plaster work beneath. Went in to the damaged areas with traditional lime render and plaster, restoring to it’s original look adding and antiquing an oak sill with a French polished finish.
Wooden Gutter Replacement
This project was a tough project for over the Christmas period as the weather did not help but with perseverance we managed to accomplish it. Again with the help from H Lee & Son woodyard and joinery in Ashbourne we source this wooden gutter which after treatment of creosote and bitumen is a decorative alternative to the plastic or cast iron look. On this Georgian house in Parwich at the bottom of the roof we’re Yorkshire slabs which had dropped and reset themselves, we cut the slabs back to correct the fall by restoring the antique gutter brackets.
Victorian Stained Glass Window Restoration
We were recommended by another client to a gentleman in sometcotes alfreton. He had been quoted £8000 to replace the window and double glazed units added. Because of the old lead work the client was having issues with with draft and with the expense of heating in the current crisis something had to be done. On the exterior we found that the client had tried to protect the rott with flash band which only made matters worse in the long run. The rott had spread to inside and loosened the frame from the opening. We managed to fix the frame work back to the opening and added stabiliser/Hardener and resin to the effected areas, carving the detail back in to what the flashband was trying to cover up. We then moved inside and fitted removable micro double glazed units using hard wood glazing beads and decorative solid brass screws, this meant that the micro double glazed units could be removed easily to be cleaned when necessary. These techniques saved our client over 75% in cost.
Lintel replacement in heritage building
The new arrival of my little boy Fred, meant that Jewett Carpentry could focus on jobs in our very own village - Parwich. Setting aside several jobs to focus on one, replacing 2 old rotten load baring lintels on a 16th century cottage. The customer asked us to replace the lintels with a hard wood, concerned about costs and considering the price of oak being astronomical at the moment, we were tasked to find a cheaper alternative. So, with the help of Lee H & Son woodyard and joinery in Ashbourne, we stained and treated timber to give an aged look, replicating the look of oak and saving our client a substantial fee. The next stage of the project, we pointed up with natural lime, and strengthened any structural damage caused by the rotting timber.
